【Origin of the word “Sapporo” 】
The leading theory is that it derivers from the Ainu (indigenous people of Japan) words “Sap (Dry) – Poro (Wide),” but another theory is that it derivers from “Sari (Wetland) -Poro (Wide) -Pe (River)” which describes the downstream basin of the Toyohira River.
The four seasons have clear differences. Spring arrives from April to June. It is the season for cherry blossoms. July and August is the short summer in Hokkaido. It gets hot during daytime but it has refreshing temperature in the morning and night, a very comfortable season to spend. In October, the autumn arrives and it reaches nearly 0 degrees on some days. The color of the mountains suddenly change to spectacular autumn leaves. December is the beginning of the long winter which creates a beautiful scenery with white snow.
